Remembering grandparents
The schools have closed for the summer, and we have had our Confirmation celebration on Friday with Archbishop Mark O’Toole. We, the Church, are made up of all ages. “Care for the Family” will help us take a closer look at family life this Sunday. But there is a feast day this week which reminds us of another important group of people in our church family.
Tuesday is the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne – the parents of Our Lady and therefore the grandparents of Jesus. So let’s pause a moment to think, remember and honour our grandparents. Sadly, all four of my grandparents were dead before I was born, and so in a sense what you didn’t have you didn’t miss. But through Parish life and connecting with hundreds of families I have learned the enormously valuable part they play in so many ways.
So this week, spare a thought and of course a prayer, for your grandparents, whether you knew them or not. Then, of course many of you yourselves are grandparents, so be aware of how much we all value you. Pray for your grandchildren as they grow up in our changing and sometimes unsettling world. And remember to place them under the care of St Joachim and St Anne, the grandparents of Jesus.

A beautiful, prayerful, colourful family mass…
It was lovely to see so many families come together to celebrate our family mass at Christ the King, Sunday 17 July at 9.30am. We have included the tweet from Christ the King Primary School below which I am sure you will agree illustrates this wonderful event!
Toddler group
Due to the extreme weather conditions, the Toddler group on Monday 18 July has been cancelled. The group will return on Monday 12 September.
Onward and upward
An examination of the Christ the King Synod report, including suggestions on how you might help us take the Synod report forward has been published on our Synod page.
Confirmation
This Friday 22 July marks another stage in our return to a more normal way of life in our 3 Churches – for the first time in three years our Archbishop visits us. And we are delighted that it should be our new Archbishop, Mark O’Toole.
Confirmation is always a very happy occasion, and we enjoyed a “home-grown” celebration last year as I celebrated the sacrament myself, according to the directives of Archbishop Stack. However, there is something special and of course appropriate when we welcome our bishop among us.
Whenever priorities in church life are discussed, youth always come near the top. So this is an occasion when we can really show our support for our young parishioners at this important stage in their journey.
So I would like to invite all of us to come to this special Mass – special for those to be confirmed, special because it is our first opportunity to welcome Archbishop Mark here to our part of his diocese. I’ll see you there!
